The Evolution of Nigerian Traditional Weddings: Past Present and Future

This book is born out of a deep passion for preserving and promoting Nigerian traditional marriage culture, which I discovered was increasingly misunderstood, under-documented, and gradually fading despite its richness and significance.
This book is born out of a deep passion for preserving and promoting Nigerian traditional marriage culture, which I discovered was increasingly misunderstood, under-documented, and gradually fading despite its richness and significance. Having worked with hundreds of clients in my professional capacity as a celebrated Alaga (Master of Ceremonies) within the traditional wedding industry, I offer—freely and wholeheartedly—my contribution to documenting this heritage for present and future generations. The work serves as a compendium of my professional experiences, insights, and cultural understanding of what makes Nigerian weddings among the most vibrant, meaningful, and colourful ceremonies in the world. It explores the beauty of marriage as an institution and carefully explains the processes, values, and symbolic practices that make it a unique cultural journey. Drawing from major Nigerian ethnic traditions—including Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, and others—the book tells the story of their enduring relevance, how they continue to be valued and respected, and the practices that have sustained marital institutions for generations. It fills an important gap in educational, socio-cultural, and traditional literature, where much of this knowledge has historically been passed down orally without proper documentation. In an era shaped by modernity and technology, this book reawakens appreciation for traditional marital values while guiding young people entering marriageable age through authentic cultural knowledge. Useful to academics, Alagas, event professionals, families, and cultural enthusiasts alike, it stands as an essential reference—an encyclopaedic guide to Nigerian traditional weddings and their enduring place in contemporary society.
